Dressing for School
At St. John’s Catholic Primary School the children must wear the complete school uniform. Our children wear their uniform with pride. We have the highest expectations with regards school uniform and appearance, and strongly believe that our high standards promote positive behaviour, support effective teaching and learning and contribute to the ethos of the school. By choosing to send your child to St. John’s, it is part of the expectation that you, as parents, agree to.
The requirements are listed below (please ensure that all items are clearly marked with your child’s name):
Girls:
- Skirt or pinafore dress – plain grey
- Blouse – light blue

The crested jumper, school tie and PE kit are available to purchase from the school’s My Ed App/online uniform shop. Navy blue coats with the school logo are also available to order. Please allow at least two weeks for delivery. You can access the online shop directly at pmx.parentmail.co.uk.
Jewellery: A wrist watch is allowed. Small plain stud ear-rings may be worn, but your child must be able to remove them independently for PE. Staff are not permitted to remove or insert earrings. Diamanté, crystals, gemstones or other decorative styles are not acceptable.
Hair: Long hair must be tied back at all times, especially for PE lessons. The style should be appropriate for school and hair should not obstruct pupils’ vision. Hair accessories should be discrete and match the uniform colours. Decorative beads are discouraged in long hair.
Haircuts should be smart; extreme haircuts are not permitted in school (‘extreme’ examples include: tram lines or other decorative patterns shaved into hair, shaved sides with longer hair across the centre). The use of hair products such as styling gel should be kept to a minimum. This list is not exhaustive.
Footwear: Shoes should be flat, black and appropriate for school. Your child should wear shoes which he or she can manage to do up independently. We do not allow children to wear trainers to school; this is because we think that this footwear is appropriate for sport or for leisurewear, but is not in keeping with the smart appearance of a school uniform.
PE Kit – This is available to order from the School Office. Children wear the school shorts and a crested t-shirt. Footwear is black plimsolls for Early Years and Key Stage 1. Key Stage 2 pupils may wear trainers. These must be plain blue, black, grey or white.
Swimming – All children in Year 4 will participate in swimming lessons at Seven Islands Leisure Centre, Lower Road, Rotherhithe. Swimming lessons are a part of the National Curriculum and are equally as important as maths and science lessons. They are not optional. To participate in swimming, your child will need to wear a swimming costume or trunks (no board shorts), a swimming hat and goggles. They will also require a towel.
